About the USS Umiak8458.422.87
The Umiak was commissioned April 1st 1992, under command of Captain Doug Glenn. Though I’m not aware of the initial history information, I can say that when I joined in December of the same year, The Umiak was thriving and had already become active in the community. My first away mission with the Umiak was a Star Trek convention at the Hilton hotel by Lambert airport.
As a member of the Umiak, I enjoyed involvement in several events and gatherings. We sponsored events such as Blood duels with a local Klingon group, to benefit the Red Cross, The Umiak Gamefest, to benefit The Make A Wish Foundation, and as I did for my first duty, we also volunteered as security and guest escorts for local Star Trek conventions and provided “color” for Star Trek movie releases. As well as those things, that were more community oriented, we also enjoyed each other’s company doing things like movie nights, gaming and going to dinner together. After the death of my wife Darla, in 1997, I chose to retire from STARFLEET in 1998. By this time, now, Rear Admiral Doug Glenn, had chosen to leave STARFLEET. Before I retired, we had gone through 2 different acting Captains before Commander Walter Otten Jr., was promoted to Captain and assumed command of the Umiak.
I stayed in retirement, and pursued other interests, such as committing to The St. Louis Renaissance Faire, which had been started by my former CO Doug Glenn. I also became involved in stage combat and developed an interest in Steampunk. Little did I know, after my retirement, the Umiak fell on hard times. Several other members had chosen to leave due to some in-fighting and discord. The Umiak was kept active by the actions of friends and family of Capt. Otten.
Time passed, and in August of 2013, I found out Walter was suffering with terminal liver cancer. In February 2015, Walter Otten lost his battle. After his death, I was asked to take command of the Umiak. After a few months of considering the offer, I accepted the position of CO of the Umiak and received my promotion to Captain at Archon, in October 2015.
